Pilgrims Rest Royal Hotel

3 Things to Do in Pilgrim’s Rest

At Mount Sheba Cottages, our guests never have to venture far to find a stellar way to enjoy another golden day in South Africa. One such golden day adventure is to take a trip to the historic heritage site of Pilgrim’s Rest.

30 minutes away from us, Pilgrim’s Rest is a small town that played a big role in the history of our wonderful country. The second of the Transvaal gold fields, the town saw prospectors seek their fortunes here from the early 1800s onwards. It now serves as a tourist attraction that transports visitors back in time to the days of the gold rush. Here are 3 things not to miss when visiting this historic town:

The Vine Restaurant & Johnny’s Pub

This dual-purpose property is a classic father-and-son-run pub and restaurant that caters for all. The restaurant offers the very best vegetarian lasagne and most tantalizing trout salad or stuffed trout around. With the trout fished locally, this is a sure-fire winner.

Once you’ve eaten your fill, head on over to Johnny’s Pub for an ice-cold beer and to check out all the amazing art that Johnny and his old man have adorned their walls with over the years.

Alanglade House Museum

Originally the residence of Alan Barry, General Manager of Transvaal Gold Mining Estates, this Edwardian mansion of a museum houses authentic antique furniture from the early 1900s. Get a feel for how people lived back in the days of the gold rush as you walk through this wonderfully maintained house preserved to encapsulate the period. Make sure to take a wander through the rose garden, too!

Old School Family Photos at Kuzzulo’s Emporium

Named after Mihu Kuzzulo, a Croatian who made his way to Pilgrim’s Rest in 1906 and opened Kuzzulo’s General Dealer, this shopping emporium offers many keepsake trinkets to memorialize your visit. It also provides costumes and an old-school photo set up so that you can take a family photo in the style of the gold rush.

Pilgrim’s Rest is a golden trip for the memory books!
